Octopus offers a standard variable tariff as the default option. This is actually cheaper than most other energy providers, due to Octopus applying a 4% discount to the standing charges.
Through your online account (or by calling them) you can choose from one of the various other tariffs depending on your usage. This can be either standard variable, fixed or a smart tariff. For smart tariffs you will need a smart meter, which Octopus will install for free.
Below is a short summary of the available tariffs, but these do vary depending on your postcode and your home.
On a fixed tariff, your unit rates and standing charge won’t change for the duration of your contract.
You can move to a fixed tariff online.
Your monthly Direct Debit amount isn’t fixed. It’s a best guess at the amount you should be paying to cover your energy charges, based on how much energy Octopus reckon you’ll use. If you’re using more or less energy than Octopus thought, and you start building up too much credit or debt, you can edit your Direct Debit from your online account.
Octopus will check in every so often, too, to make sure your monthly payment is about right to cover the cost of the energy you’re using.
At the end of your fixed tariff Octopus will give reasonable notice of your options. If you don’t let Octopus know your preference, they’ll move you onto a flexible tariff.
Flexible Octopus is a variable tariff, which means the price you pay for your energy (i.e. the unit rates and standing charge) can rise and fall with wholesale energy prices.
Octopus will always give reasonable notice of any changes to the pricing of flexible tariffs.
You can switch tariffs at any time – just get in touch to do so.
There are no fees for switching from a flexible tariff to another tariff, and no lock-ins or exit penalties if you decide to switch away from Octopus.
Get a transparent look at the true cost of energy – and when the market price drops, so do your bills. Choose Tracker for your electricity, gas, or both.
We update Tracker prices every day based on an independently published wholesale market price, calculated using our transparent formula. In warmer months, prices tend to be lower, then typically increase – likely double – in colder months.
Unlike standard tariffs that lag months behind the market, Tracker gives you immediate savings when wholesale prices drop.
Tracker features Price Cap Protect, which caps the maximum daily price at 100p / kWh for electricity and 30p / kWh for gas. That’s a lot higher than Ofgem’s energy price cap, so if you can’t afford prices to go that high during peaks, you’re probably better off sticking with a protected tariff such as Flexible Octopus.
Unleash the potential of solar and storage to reduce your bills. You need solar panels to be eligible for Octopus Flux.
Power your home with 100% renewable energy on this Octopus Energy electricity tariff designed exclusively for solar and battery owners.
How does it work?
Octopus Flux is an import and export tariff optimised to give you the best rates for consuming and selling your energy and support the grid during peak periods.
Intelligent Octopus Flux is a smart import and export tariff optimised to give you the best rates for consuming and selling your energy.
You need solar panels and a GivEnergy battery to be eligible for Intelligent Octopus Flux, but Octopus don’t need to have been the ones to install them.
To switch to Intelligent Octopus Flux, you’ll need to download the Octopus Energy app. Once you have connected your battery in the app, we will switch your import and export tariffs at the same time.
If you’re not already on an Octopus export tariff, you’ll need to sign up to either Octopus Outgoing or Octopus Flux. Once your export is set up, you can switch to Intelligent Octopus Flux in the app.
To get Intelligent Octopus Flux you need:
Charge on the cheap – Intelligent Octopus Flux pairs with your battery to optimise your charging and discharging to save you money and help balance the grid.
More bang for your beams – Octopus will export the energy you have stored when you’ll make the best return. So you’ll always get the best deal on the sunshine you have stored and could even make a profit.
Data at your fingertips – With the handy, hassle-free app, you can track what’s happening at a glance.
Perfect for homes with solar panels, battery storage and other types of renewable generation.
Outgoing Octopus comes in two forms:
1. Outgoing Agile – We match your half-hourly prices, with day-ahead wholesale rates that are uncapped. Check out the historical export rates for our agile tariff here
Best for: those with energy storage who are willing to be on the ball with when you can import and export your energy. Sell your electricity when prices are highest and use energy when prices are lowest.
Tip: Combine Agile Outgoing (export) with our Agile tariff (Import) and integrate with Amazon Alexa or IFTTT to really make the most of your smart grid.
2. Outgoing – 15p per kWh for every unit you export
Best for simplicity: get paid a flat rate when you generate more energy than you use. Currently paying a flat rate of 15p per kWh
Tip: For homes without a battery, your solar will prioritise your home demand and any extra will go to the grid. For homes with a battery, excess will go to your battery, once the battery is full, excess will be exported to the grid.
Agile’s prices are often cheaper when the energy in the grid is greener, and more expensive when energy’s dirtier (usually between 4-7pm, when the UK’s fossil fuel generating stations have been turned on to meet high demand).
When Agile Octopus customers shift their energy usage to access the cheapest rates, they reduce the need to burn as many fossil fuels during ‘peak times’, and help us get the most out of green energy when it’s abundant. This way, Agile rewards you for helping drive the green energy revolution — making a 100% renewable energy system possible on a massive scale.
Between 4-8pm every day (usually nearer 4pm), your unit rates are updated for the next 24 hours, based on the wholesale market rates.
As you use electricity we’ll use the half-hourly data from your smart meter to calculate your charges.
A daily standing charge covers costs including metering, distribution, and other fixed costs.
Agile Octopus is unlike any other energy tariff. Its dynamic pricing unlocks the opportunity for customers to make savings by shifting their electricity use to times when it’s cheaper (and greener).
Agile prices vary a lot based on trends in the wholesale energy market (our energy boffins blog regularly about it). Currently, soaring global gas prices have pushed wholesale prices to record highs: they’ve increased over 400% since the start of 2021. This means Agile’s prices are consistently high right now, and it’s likely you’ll save more money by sticking to a standard variable or fixed tariff throughout the Winter.
Price Cap Protect keeps you safe from surge prices
When more electricity is being used than generated, wholesale prices rise. While price spikes are short-lived, typically lasting 30 minutes to an hour, they do happen. Agile Octopus includes Price Cap Protect, which ensures you’ll never pay more than 100p / kWh for your electricity, guaranteed.
Across the UK, whenever more electricity is generated than consumed, energy prices fall – sometimes to the point where prices drop below zero, and suppliers are paid to take energy off the grid.
Agile Octopus introduces Plunge Pricing – a world first that lets you take advantage of these negative price events, and get paid for the electricity you use. You’ll receive alerts whenever prices drop below zero, and you can use our Agile API to program your smart devices.
Between July 2020 and July 2021, unit prices dropped below 2p / kWh 163 times!
IFTTT is a free platform that helps you do more with apps and smart devices.
With Agile Octopus and IFTTT Applets, you can make your smart home even smarter. Tell your hot water immersion heater to turn off when prices are high, tell your Roomba to clean when prices are low, or change the colour of your Philips Hue based on the current price.
